Fever

Among the cement gray

the chrome pipes spitting black

inserting themselves through the walls

joints bolted in perfect rows

the vent’s grilles coated in

gray fur of dust while

in the depths of cubical darkness

the ducts are rehearsing

their mosquito frequencies

circling, circling

intravenous tubes

coming from the ceiling

the escalator stairs moving

the transparent isolation curtains

and insulation bandages

ward, ward, ward

wrapped in a thin, hot,

membrane of wet air

a tropical mummy

the grain of linen

glued to back

the rats are squeaking

behind the manicured hedge

overhead abstract mold paintings

the walls sweat beneath the humid sun

slick with moisture,

fractured neon flickering

everywhere the city releases its vapor

thick with the odor of sour

and something gathering

Stacking.

It’s stacking.

Cutting the hair

a narrow path toward the tram

weaving beneath the trees

pieces of sky

scattered through the canopy

my eyes caught upward

the expanse searing blue

burning from somewhere inside itself

glowing

so glowing

it almost hurts to look

while the green

is already paling

into the ochre

of dead leaves

inside

the tram is hot

my eyes adrift

sliding off faces

the bus after it

hot too

nothing catches

station side

a cement mixer truck

on its driver’s door

a huge black ant

trapped inside of a circle

letters spelling

CONCRETE SOLUTION

now legs delivering me

up to the pale green room

I’m perched

against the windowpane

at the edge of the baby pink couch

eruption of ultraviolet

amid the crisped flowers up there

my squinting eyes follow a wasp

skimming the ceiling

with its possibility

of a sharp burning pain

then there she is

scissors and all

letting my name out

among the foliage

her tanned legs

impossibly long

taut muscles

running along

the outside of each thigh

only a thin line of brightness

like a second skin

above her high heels

elsewhere

beneath pine and spruce

among twin flowers

and bilberry leaves

an anthill

out they come

the endless crawling and milling

pouring over

one another

swarming up my legs

Carbon

From childhood

a still image of a blackboard

above which my head is hovering

is moving now

I had dandruff

fingers running at full speed through my hair

all the hounds of a lazy afternoon

with nothing to do after me

(had you passed then

by the yard and the cherry tree

and seen it

you might have thought

strange)

it was falling like volcanic ash

dusting the blackboard

still sifting

a slow granular veil

the little heretic watched

a cosmos taking shape

right there and right then

specks gathering

others drifting apart

something rippling through

and in one of those dots

life erupting

Today

I will admit

creation

takes more than that

everything does.
